In 2011, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) marked its bicentennial. In celebration, Patient Care Services under the leadership of Jeanette Ives Erickson, RN, DNP, FAAN, senior vice president for patient care and chief nurse tasked the Institute for Patient Care to develop and host a nursing symposium; Strategies for Creating and Sustaining a Professional Practice Environment was held on September 18 and 19, 2011.
The symposium focused on successful strategies and lessons learned in creating and sustaining a professional practice environment in the hospital setting. Presentations included: leadership, strategic planning and evaluation with breakout sessions focused on specific scalable and translatable best practices such as, an evidence-based approach to fall prevention and intervention, patient-family and provider partnerships, life-long learning through nurse residency programs, promoting research and evidence-based practice, diversity and an interdisciplinary model for shared decision-making.
A professional practice model provides a critical framework for creating and shaping the professional practice environment. The MGH professional practice model builds on the salient elements of autonomy, control over practice and collaborative relations with physicians. Building on that foundation, the MGH model provides a structure through which nurses can direct the continued growth and effectiveness of care delivery systems.
